Burnout can hit you as a result of prolonged stress in any part of your life, but self-employed people report significantly higher levels of overall burnout than those with traditional employment. As a self-employed individual working in an industry that is often heavily stigmatized, with your human interaction limited to online communication, you could be at risk for–or already experiencing–burnout. Try the 3 tips below to help stave off some of the job-related stress that can lead to burnout.
1. Take breaks.
When you’re running your own business and working from home, it’s easy to be on the clock all the time. Most businesses aren’t open 24/7/365, and you shouldn’t be working as if you are, either. Set “office hours”, and when quitting time comes around, log off and shut down your computer. Your work emails and social media notifications can wait until tomorrow. If you can’t resist the urge to check, turn off app notifications on your phone when you are done work for the day. Give yourself a weekend, too. Take at least 1 day off each week, preferably 2.
2. Track your time.
Make sure you’re spending time on sites, content, and offers that are getting you the maximum financial return for your effort. You should be tracking how much you earn from each site anyway, so add in another row or column that keeps track of how much time you invest. Burnout often happens when you are working really long hours, so the goal is to make the most money in the least amount of time. Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket, but focus most of your time and energy on the sites where you make the most money.
3. Create balance.
As I mentioned in #1, time away from work is critical. Create and maintain balance in your life by making time for your interests and relationships outside of work. Use the flexibility that comes with self-employment to schedule time for friends, family, and hobbies. It’s easy to become a hermit when you work online, so you’ll need to actively seek out opportunities to participate in activities you like.
